As both a Sahrawi born in Algeria, and as a student living abroad for most of my life, a constant struggle for me has been to answer the question so often posed: where are you from? The simple answer being Western Sahara. However, the confused look that follows often requires turning a simple answer into a history lecture.
Getting responses such as, “Oh, where is your country located? And, “how come we’ve never heard of it?” pushes me not only to ask myself why people have never heard of Western Sahara, but also to do a great amount of research. My answer to such a question is mostly due to the lack of media and the lack of an audible Sahrawi voice.
